Albania’s traditionally strong family structure has been buffeted by poverty, emigration and internal population movements and the wholesale change in societal rules and roles that followed the opening up of the country.

State social services largely collapsed when the Communist government fell and are only slowly being restored. Children from poor families are especially at risk. Almost no children with disabilities attend school, and those lacking parental care are particularly vulnerable. We help to protect these children from neglect, abuse and exploitation and to ensure special protection for those in need.
