National statistics do not reveal gender gaps in education. Both sexes attend pre-school and primary schools almost equally, and more girls than boys attend high schools in urban areas and universities.
However, a Gender Review in Education supported by UNICEF in 2003 highlights a lag in girls’ enrolment, especially in rural areas. Girls in rural areas are more likely to drop out of school than boys, due to gender disparity, family concerns about safety and lack of bathrooms in schools. A recently established Gender Task Force has developed gender indicators and plans to create a gender focused national education plan in 2004.
