Students tutor their peers at Stavri Themeli elementary school in Korça

As class sizes increase (40-50 students per class is not uncommon) and teacher pay plummets, there is increasing focus on teaching to the "middle" of the class, meaning that children with special needs, though present in the classroom, are effectively not being reached.

UNICEF is supporting new teaching-learning strategies such as interactive and child-centred methodologies to prevent this invisible marginalization and dropout. A total of 200 teachers have been trained in these strategies, leading to improved performance in math and reading among 1,500 children with learning difficulties.
