A family that has known hard times shares an intimate moment

This initiative aims to improve the parenting skills of parents, caregivers and teachers in the north of Albania. There is a prevailing mentality in the region that education starts with the child being enrolled in the elementary school. The failure to believe in the learning capacities of infants leads to lack of intervention through stimulation. There is a widespread belief that punishment is the best way to educate children.

The project uses the home visiting approach by engaging social workers to conduct training for 600 parents and caregivers. Training parents at their home is an interactive process supporting existing knowledge and introducing best practices. A manual covering good parenting skills and teaching about the development stages from birth to age 6 has been produced and disseminated among families. The content of the education package is tailored according to the needs of the families and children of the area based on a prior assessment of the situation.
