Iron, iodine and other micronutrients are crucial for health. As part of a national effort to eliminate iodine deficiency and achieve universal salt iodization by 2005, UNICEF has supported development of the first salt iodizing line in Albania at the Vlora salt factory, which began production in June 2003.

We also aid the ‘social marketing’ of iodized salt, helping to educate families about the importance of eating iodized salt, and the establishment of a quality assurance system to make sure salt sold in the market retains its iodine. UNICEF also supported the Albanian government to prepare a national plan of action to eliminate iodine deficiency disorders.
