ATHENS, 26 August 2004 – Four hundred and fifty promising young athletes from around the world graduated as UNICEF “Champions for Children’s Rights” in a ceremony held at the Olympic Youth Camp in Athens, Greece on 21 August 2004.
The ceremony was attended by UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Johann Olav Koss, who encouraged the young athletes to become role models for others, and to become involved in using sport as a tool for development, peace and the promotion of children’s rights.
Prior to the ceremony the participants had devised individual action plans, detailing ways in which they could use sport to tackle some of the issues facing children in their own countries.

Prizes were presented to Mina Kalinic (Serbia and Montenegro), Pernille Goetz & Sara Peterson (Denmark), Mendilla Harong (Federal States of Micronesia), Nurul Fatima Aboul Hamid & Ryan Chong (Malaysia), Chloe Kempe (Bermuda) and David Sedgwick (South Africa) for their excellent action plans on how to tackle issues ranging from organising self-defence courses for girls to reduce cases of rape and murder of under-age girls in Malaysia to using sport to integrate foreign youngsters in Danish society. UNICEF country offices will work with some of the participants to realize some of the action plans put forward.
The graduation was the culmination of a series of workshops designed to motivate the young athletes to champion children’s rights in their own countries, by becoming involved in sport for development projects in their home communities and beyond.
The Olympic Youth Camp ran from 11-26 August 2004 in Marathon, Greece, and brought together 450 young elite athletes from across the world. This is the first time that UNICEF has run workshops at an Olympic Youth Camp.
