NEW YORK, 2 August 2004 – The world’s children were at the forefront as football giants Manchester United and AC Milan faced each other in an exhibition match at Giants Stadium in New Jersey on Saturday.
UNICEF banners were prominent throughout the stadium and videos on children’s issues were shown on the big screen. The match was part of the ‘Champions World’ tournament, which runs from 25 July until 3 August 2004. A total of 11 exhibition games will be played by famous European teams at various venues throughout the United States. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.
UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Toshiyuki Niwa was present at the match. “Despite poverty, war and AIDS, all over the world, children play football,” he said.
Mr. Niwa explained that UNICEF uses these opportunities to educate children about HIV and AIDS, to help them cope with the horrors of war, and to help bring girls into school. “Manchester United, AC Milan and Champions World are all partners of UNICEF and part of this effort,” he added.
Manchester United has been a corporate partner of UNICEF UK since 1999 when they formed the ‘United for UNICEF’ partnership. Since then the club has raised over £1.2 million in support of UNICEF's work for children.
Through this partnership, Manchester United, one of the world’s best-known football clubs, is helping to change the lives of children around the globe.
UNICEF works with FIFA and other sporting bodies to raise awareness about children’s issues everywhere.
