NEW YORK, 7 July 2004 – UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Karin Sham Poo today thanked members of Zonta International, a global service organization which seeks to advance the status of women and girls, for more than 30 years of support.
“On behalf of the entire UNICEF family, I would like to express our deep appreciation for the long-standing partnership between Zonta International and UNICEF,” Ms. Sham Poo said during a luncheon at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York.
The luncheon was co-hosted by the U.S. Fund for UNICEF and chaired by Jackie Shapiro, Zonta’s UN Chairman. Among the guests were Margit Webjörn, Zonta International President, and more than 1,100 Zonta members.
Zonta International has raised more than $3 million to help UNICEF fight maternal and neonatal tetanus in Afghanistan and Nepal, prevent female genital mutilation in Burkina Faso and get girls back to school in South Africa, among other projects.
Other guest speakers at the luncheon included UNICEF Senior Project Officer Dr. François Gasse; Director of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) at the US Fund for UNICEF Meg Gardinier; and human rights activist, writer and award-winning journalist Jan Goodwin.
