UNICEF is administered by a Executive Director under policies, including the determination of programmes and allocation of funds, established by an Executive Board in accordance with such principles as may be laid down by the Economic and Social Council. Since 1946, UNICEF Executive Directors have been appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General in consultation with the UNICEF Executive Board. Anthony Lake is UNICEF's sixth and current Executive Director, and was appointed on 1 May 2010.
