The Executive Board has 36 members, elected for three-year terms with the following regional allocation of seats: 8 African States, 7 Asian States, 4 Eastern European States, 5 Latin American and Caribbean States and 12 Western European and Other States.

Election to the Executive Board

To ensure continuity of experience, in any given year only a certain number of new members are elected to the Executive Board. Each year, usually in April, during a resumed organizational session, the Economic and Social Council elects United Nations Member States, from the five regions, to serve as members of the Executive Board.

The table below shows the distribution of new seats per region that are up for election by the Economic and Social Council in the next three years:

Usually, each member serves a three-year term. However, the Western European and Others group has established a rotation schedule for its members under which some members do not serve a full three-year term.
