Wednesday, 19 January 2005: India seeks continued progress in fight against child mortality

NEW YORK, 19 January 2005 – On the final day of the Executive Board meeting, the representative of India praised UNICEF’s efforts to reduce child mortality, but said that further progress is needed.

Reva Nayyar, Secretary of India’s Department of Women and Child Development, said that child survival is one of the leading issues for her Department.  There are an estimated 400 million children in India, out of a total population of 1.03 billion.

UNICEF’s long-standing involvement in India, a relationship which began almost fifty years ago, has been instrumental in helping the Government battle child deaths, said Ms. Nayyar. “India and UNICEF have a very important relationship.  The long-term relationship we’ve had has been very productive.  We have reduced mortality rates in the last few years but we have not got the results we have been looking for. We are looking for a faster dropping in the mortality rates.”
