Junior Professional Programme

The Junior Professional Officer (JPO) evolved from the concept of Associate Experts who were young professionals providing technical support in various United Nations (UN) Agencies since the early 1950s.  The JPO programme in UNICEF was introduced in 1968.

The purpose of the JPO Programme is to allow young men and women, sponsored by their respective governments, to acquire experience in international development cooperation activities under the close direction of senior UNICEF officials, while contributing to the implementation of UNICEF’s country programmes.

While the Programme provides JPOs with a unique personal and cultural experience, it also allows UNICEF to identify talents that could become part of the human resources pool of the organization.

THE UNDERLYING VALUE OF THE PROGRAMME IS THEREFORE TO PROVIDE A MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL ARRANGEMENT BETWEEN THE JPOs, THE SPONSORING GOVERNMENT, AND THE ORGANIZATION.
