In Southern Africa: A statistical profile
Highlights
This publication builds a statistical profile of the intersections of violence against women and violence against children. The lifetime prevalence of forced sex among girls and women varies widely among countries – from 6 to 27 per cent – with a SADC regional average of 17 per cent. Around 120 million children aged 1 to 14 years (over 8 in 10) in the region experience violent discipline at home. Those who perpetrate or experience violence later in life are more likely to have experienced violence in childhood. The report ends with a joint “Call of Action” from UNICEF and SADC to prevent violence happening to children and women, respond more effectively and leave no-one behind.
